JUNEAU, Alaska -- Some lawmakers are questioning whether or not the state can afford certain alternative energy projects and brought up those questions in Monday's Senate Resources Committee meeting.
They're concerned the Senate's wide-ranging energy bill would force the state to take some risks.
Language in the omnibus energy bill would require state agencies to consider using alternative energy projects.

Understanding Energy Transmission - ET 101
Despite the length of transmission lines, by tradition, much of the energy produced in a region stays within or near that region. There are exceptions, but they won't be discussed at this point. For example when Alaska interconnects to British Columbia, most of the newer energy won't travel much farther than to the nearest load in British Columbia.
When new generation is added, the energy is actually shifted to the next region's load in a kind of domino effect. So the power may leave the region, but it doesn't go too far.

My known heritage is Alaskan, American, Canadian, Norwegian, Welsh and German. I was born in Alaska, but have lived in Oregon and Washington, as well as having spent time with my cousins in British Columbia.
